Some educationalists criticised the programme [Teletubbies] for encouraging young children to mimic the infantile sounds of its characters and Christian leaders in the US, who claimed that one of its characters, Tinky Winky, was gay.I suspect that this sentence originally began "The programme was criticised by some educationalists...", and was recast from the passive by a subeditor who wasn't quite paying attention. But I do like the idea of toddlers imitating the "infantile sounds" made by Jerry Falwell et al.
